In a recent study by the CIPD they identified the top 10 attributes for senior managers.  The highest, and probably least surprising was that of competence, followed by being an effective communicator (45%) and trustworthiness (41%). Surprisingly the least important attributes we a seen as being assertiveness (6%), being driven (8%) and demonstrating ethical behaviour (15%). The highest rating attributes demonstrate the need for senior leaders to be highly skilled in building meaningful relationships with colleagues in order to maintain higher levels of engagement and ultimately performance within the team. Lower levels of trust have been associated with less well developed psychological contracts.
